Release day!

It's release day for The Wicked Instead! You can purchase it at the Hard Limits Store. It's also searchable on Amazon, but I try to encourage people to buy it from the publisher's website. It's easy to do and Amazon doesn't take a cut, which is always nice. If you sign up for the Hard Limits newsletter here, you'll also be entered to win awesome swag. The more subscribers they have, the more swag they'll give away, so sign up! You'll love what you can get.

It's hard to believe my novel has been released into the wild at last. It's a little terrifying (oh no, what did I forget to add/delete? what if people hate it?) but also a mix of relief and that weird pressure I put on myself. After all, now I have to write the sequel. For now, I'm allowing myself a little burst of success. I've been at this for a long time. I wrote my first "novel" when I was 12. I never really pushed for publication but I always had it in mind, knowing that I wanted to polish my skills first.

I knew when I started writing The Wicked Instead that this was THE novel that I was going to get published. I didn't exactly look at it and think "OH MY GOD THIS IS BRILLIANCE!" (though I was and am pretty proud of it overall). I determined that this was going to be a book that people wanted to read and engage in. The concept was good enough and marketable enough to capture people's attention, and then it was up to me to draw people in.

  2. This is going to be a really long comment, and I'm so sorry about that, but I need to get this out hahaha

I have no idea how I found your book. Seriously. But at the end of a long journey through a series of links, there it was. I'm half way though, so far, it's fabulous.
So, naturally, I googled you, hoping that there was more awesome to be found, and this blog came up. This, all of this - fantastic.
I wanted to thank you. Not just for the amazing book, but for the amazing book with the diverse characters that are just...them. Mostly I wanted to thank you for writing a character who uses a wheelchair that isn't the token friend of someone, or who exists, but isn't detailed. You don't shy away from the impacts a SCI has on a body and that GOOD because shit happens sometimes, and you deal with it. It isn't a bad thing, its life for some people, but their version of life isn't represented 99% of the time and that blows. And while I don't have a spinal cord injury, I do have Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis so I guess I can relate to Cary in a small way. And I saw one of your other posts about how people looked at you funny when you were using a cane, and yeah, they look at me the same way. I get you man, people think its ok to be all up in your business if you're under 80 and rockin a cane, its weird.
I'm just going to stop now, since I'm clearly getting off topic, but just know this. You write another book, I'll buy it without hesitation.

    1. Hi Karyn! I was so pleased to wake up and find your comment this morning. One of the things I strive to do is represent people who aren't your average white, able, cisgendered, heterosexual, mainstream folks, and I try to stress that everyone has their own perspectives and their own lives.

It's amazing how any difference (especially a physical one) can make you the target of negative/incredulous attention. People just don't understand, and I sure wish they'd try rather than just getting the D: face.

And of course, I'm also completely thrilled that you're enjoying the book and blog! When I hear I've touched someone in some way with my writing, I know I've done exactly what I set out to do--reach people's hearts. So of course I'll come up with more! I'm writing the sequel right now.

Thanks so much for your comment. I'm honored and pleased to hear from a reader.

      Vivien
